Heed the Warning
Jeremiah 6:10
To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the Lord is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.

I was enjoying my usual morning walk along the beautiful Riverwalk in the town I live in. I came “this close” to stepping on a snake. Half of him was laying on the walk and the other half was still in the grass. If I had not seen him, my next footstep would have landed on him. He was laying there with his head lifted in my direction. I don’t much about snakes, but I thought only poisonous ones
were that brave. It turns out, he was a chicken snake as explained to me by another walker and confirmed by the picture I sent my son. Still, I don’t care for snakes and my contact with the one this morning was too close for comfort, even for a non-venomous one.
As I stepped back, I saw a lady coming in the direction of the snake with a small dog. I yelled to her that there was a snake on the walk. She did change direction and said thanks, but she almost seemed to have an attitude. Before I moved away, I saw another walker headed that way and yelled out my warning to him as well. He was a little more polite, coming over to see the snake and then proceeding to teach me snake 101, that while was friendly, left me feeling somewhat ignorant.
I was very troubled as I walked back to my car, cutting my walk short. Almost stepping on a snake had shaken me. Not knowing if it was dangerous or not, I’d given warning to people who had not seemed very appreciative. I felt there was something God needed to tell me about this encounter and so I prayed. And then I realized what it was. There is nothing more dangerous than leaving this world without Jesus. What kind of response to you receive when you share the Word? Attitude? Ungratefulness? That was my first person. The second was nicer but made me feel I wasn’t so smart. People can have that reaction to believers also; as if we aren’t quite as bright as they are for following Jesus.
It turns out my warning today wasn’t that serious because the snake wasn’t dangerous. But Hell is. Not following Christ and giving Him your heart is. That’s my real warning for all who read this. Please heed it.
