Idolatry

1 Corinthians 10: 14

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.

The definition of idolatry it “the worship of someone or something other than God as though it were God.”

We tend to think of idolatry as worshipping false gods. That is indeed a dangerous path to be on, it is witchcraft and demonic. The truth is, though, ANYTHING, we put before God is our idol. It can be ourselves, our jobs, our family, our own desires. There is not one Christian, no matter how devout, who has not succumbed to idolatry at some point.

Miss church for events for your children?

Miss church for your job?

Neglect your Bible and prayer time for a television show?

Neglect your Bible and prayer time because you are too tired from all the other activities you partake in?

End a marriage because “you’ve grown apart”?

Enter a marriage unequally yoked?

The list goes on and on. Sometimes our sins are not obvious because we can still fit that right appearance and then we criticize those that are openly struggling with sins. Even though many of us still “look the part of a good Christian,” we break that first commandment quite often while we sit in judgement on those that struggle with the rest of them. We ALL need to examine our own hearts daily.
